Hepatitis A is a serious viral illness that affects the liver. It is usually spread through swallowing items contaminated with hepatitis A, for example, by eating or drinking food contaminated by stool from an infected person. Some people do not develop symptoms, even if infected.
Symptoms of hepatitis A usually appear from 15 to 50 days after exposure (range 2-6 weeks) and include fever, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Hepatitis A can be diagnosed through an easy blood test.
If you do not have hepatitis A infection, you can get the hepatitis A vaccine that may help prevent infection if received within 14 days of exposure. If your exposure occurred more than 14 days ago, hepatitis A vaccine still may help reduce symptoms if you become infected and protect you from possible future hepatitis exposures.
Other than vaccination, the best way to prevent spreading of hepatitis A to others is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using the bathroom (or changing diapers) and before preparing food or drinks, and before eating.
The hepatitis A vaccine can be obtained from your regular healthcare provider or pharmacist, and is covered by most insurance plans. Utah County Health Department is offering the vaccination free of charge for people who have no other means to get vaccinated. Contact the Utah County Health Department at 151 S. University Avenue, Provo, Utah or call 801-851- 4372. No appointment is necessary.
